Acreage battle looming for corn, cotton and wheat

An ag economist says his early acreage projections are pointing to corn still being a favorable option despite higher fertilizer costs.

David Widmar with Ag Economic Insights tells Brownfield even with corn’s cost structure set to increase next year, the crop still has a profitable outlook.

“What about the corn-soybean price ratio,” Widmar said. “That has shifted considerably to really start to favor corn more than soybeans, more than we’ve seen in the past. So, that’s going to offset some of this fertilizer.”

He said the 2022 acreage debate could mirror this year’s where several crops were trying to increase acreage.

“We could have a repeat of that where wheat, cotton, [and] corn are all looking for more acreage,” he said.

Widmar said ongoing wheat planting will play a large role in the overall acreage outlook.
