Michigan approves new rabbit vaccine

The Michigan Department of Agriculture has approved a new vaccine for use in rabbits.

The vaccine is meant to combat rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus Type 2 and is the only one approved by USDA in the U.S. to control the disease.

While the disease has not been reported in Michigan and does not impact human health, it does have a high mortality rate in domestic and wild rabbits.  The RHD virus has currently been reported in 16 states across the western and southwestern U.S. with common symptoms of sudden death and blood-stained noses caused by internal bleeding.

Owners are encouraged to work with their veterinarians to learn more about the vaccine.
