Kind, Thompson propose 35-million for CWD research and management

Two farm-state House representatives have proposed a 35-million-dollar bill that would expand research into Chronic Wasting Disease.  Republican Glenn GT Thompson from Pennsylvania and Democrat Ron Kind of Wisconsin introduced the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act, which if passed, would allow the USDA to partner with states when managing deer, elk, and moose. 

The bill would also get feedback from cervid producers for improving the Herd Certification Program and would require USDA to develop best practices and precautions for slowing the spread of CWD.

The legislation has the support of several groups including the North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA), National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Boone & Crockett, National Deer Association (NDA), Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), and the Mule Deer Foundation.

Update: Congressmen Ron Kind and Glen GT Thompson announced the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act legislation package unanimously passed the House Ag Committee Thursday, 10/21/21.
