Vanderburgh County's COVID cases fall 4.1%; Indiana cases plummet 15.6%

Indiana reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 13,897 new cases. That's down 15.6% from the previous week's tally of 16,462 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 26th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 9.7% from the week before, with 593,153 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 2.34% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 12 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Vanderburgh County reported 440 cases and six deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 459 cases and seven deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 31,975 cases and 473 deaths.

Warrick County reported 163 cases and four deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 155 cases and five deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,225 cases and 188 deaths.

Posey County reported 35 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 39 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 3,742 cases and 43 deaths.

Gibson County reported 75 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 95 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,480 cases and 113 deaths.

Dubois County reported 112 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 137 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,210 cases and 129 deaths.

Spencer County reported 27 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 65 cases and four deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 3,364 cases and 42 deaths.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 70 counties, with the best declines in Marion County, with 1,429 cases from 1,695 a week earlier; in Knox County, with 194 cases from 374; and in Elkhart County, with 470 cases from 639.

Indiana ranked 44th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 53.1% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 65.9%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Indiana reported administering another 101,556 vaccine doses, including 21,101 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 162,131 vaccine doses, including 37,834 first doses. In all, Indiana reported it has administered 7,010,537 total doses.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Blackford County with 544 cases per 100,000 per week; Knox County with 530; and Steuben County with 471. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 1,429 cases; Allen County, with 1,034 cases; and Lake County, with 678. Weekly case counts rose in 20 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Noble, Tippecanoe and Orange counties.

In Indiana, 263 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 296 people were were reported dead.

A total of 996,341 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 16,245 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 44,933,336 people have tested positive and 724,317 people have died.
