Man with gun killed following car chase in Vancouver, deputies say

The Clark County Sheriff's Office was attempting to arrest a man for assault. The suspect armed with a gun didn't comply and a shooting occurred, deputies say.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A man is dead after a shooting Sunday morning in Vancouver involving sheriff's deputies, the Clark County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) said.

In the early morning hours, just before 2:30 a.m., CCSO deputies pulled over a vehicle associated with a man they had probable cause to arrest for an assault with a handgun.

The suspect drove off as deputies were attempting to make a traffic stop, and they pursued, CCSO said.

Deputies used a PIT maneuver in the area of Northeast 122nd Avenue and Northeast 49th Street, which stopped the fleeing vehicle.

That's when deputies said the man got out of the vehicle armed with a handgun and failed to comply with their instructions.

At this time it's unclear what happened, but deputies said a shooting occurred. The sheriff's office has not yet said who fired the shots.

The suspect was killed. Deputies said he was in possession of a handgun.

Neighbor Virginia Davidson said her family has lived near the corner of Northeast 122nd and 49th Street, since the 1970s.

"Right outside the door," Davidson said. "And this neighborhood has never been like that... Makes you kind you nervous."

The Southwest Washington Regional Independent Investigation Team is conducting the investigation.

Rosie and Paul Bennett live in a mobile home community nearby. Their neighbor's house has bullet holes in it from the shooting incident.

"I've never experienced anything like this," Rosie said. "I've always lived in a safe place. I hope it doesn't change the face of our neighborhood."

Involved deputies were placed on critical incident leave per standard protocol.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
