Although Sen. Lindsey Graham has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, the South Carolina Republican became a breakthrough case and was infected in August. Graham's infection, although unpleasant, wasn't life-threatening — and he has been encouraging vaccination, which got him booed during a speech in his state over the weekend.

Graham described his illness during a speech on the Senate floor back in August, saying, "I've been vaccinated, and I got COVID anyway. A couple of really bad days, but I'm doing better — and I feel on the mend. And I'm confident if I hadn't had the vaccine, it'd have been a lot worse."

The 66-year-old conservative, speaking at a GOP event in Summerville, South Carolina over the weekend, reiterated that he is glad he got vaccinated — and it didn't take anti-vaxxers long to start booing.

Graham told the crowd, "If you haven't had the vaccine, you ought to think about getting it because if you're my age… I didn't tell you to get it, you ought to think about it."

But even suggesting that they at least consider getting vaccinated for COVID-19 offended people in the crowd, who kept booing.

"Well, I'm glad I got it; 92% of people in hospitals in South Carolina are unvaccinated," Graham said — inspiring anti-vaxxers in the crowd to shout "not true!" and "false!"

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 75% of U.S.-based adults have been at least partially vaccinated for COVID-19. But vaccination rates can vary considerably from state to state. In South Carolina, according to the Mayo Clinic, only 55% of adults have been at least partially vaccinated — compared to 77% in Vermont and Massachusetts.
