POET pledges to be carbon neutral by 2050

The world’s largest biofuels producer is pledging to be carbon-neutral by 2050.

POET, with more than 30 ethanol plants in the Midwest, recently released a sustainability report outlining the company’s focus on environmental, social, and governance initiatives.

Vice president of corporate affairs Doug Berven tells Brownfield POET has always been environmentally conscious.

“And more recently, the administrations have been putting out carbon goals and we thought it would make a lot more sense for us to have something more official.”

He says the company has been working toward the sustainability report, which states POET will have a 70 percent better carbon intensity score compared to gasoline by 2030 and be carbon neutral as an energy source by 2050.

“Those are pretty aggressive goals, but we feel very optimistic about our ability to meet those (and) take them very seriously.”

Berven says most of the results outlined in the report will be achieved through process efficiencies and the use of renewable energy sources.
