Polymer clay artists like British designer Maive Ferrando are good at sculpting.  Her tutorials on how to create this skull and roses pendant is great for Halloween or Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

She shares many tips on technique and tools for her skull tutorial. She actually works on a flatish piece of clay to start with as this makes it easier for sculpting. She does not add more clay for the back of the skull until later.

I found it useful to watch her process.  I like how she used two tools to help her form the skull's teeth. Also helpful is the use of a firmer base like a coaster rather than parchment paper as some polymer clay workers use.

The second tutorial covers the decorative part of the skull design.

See more of Maive's fabulous food related polymer clay jewelry on her Etsy. You can also follow her Youtube channel for helpful tutorials.
