Vanderburgh County's COVID cases fall 8.4%; Indiana cases holding steady

Indiana reported 26,760 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, down from 26,364 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 15th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 1.1% from the week before, with 1,030,256 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 2.6% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 36 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Some governments may have delayed reporting across the Labor Day holiday, and people who normally would have been tested might not have been tested then. Week-to-week comparisons may be inaccurate.

Vanderburgh County reported 908 cases and 14 deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 991 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 29,927 cases and 439 deaths.

Warrick County reported 334 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 383 cases and six deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 10,523 cases and 176 deaths.

Posey County reported 96 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 98 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 3,549 cases and 41 deaths.

Gibson County reported 139 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 248 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 6,036 cases and 106 deaths.

Dubois County reported 238 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 252 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 7,596 cases and 123 deaths.

Spencer County reported 74 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 117 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 3,130 cases and 34 deaths.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Rush County with 826 cases per 100,000 per week; Pike County with 775; and Clay County with 747. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 3,347 cases; Allen County, with 1,549 cases; and Lake County, with 1,086. Weekly case counts rose in 48 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in St. Joseph, Elkhart and Vigo counties.

Indiana ranked 44th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 51.6% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 63.8%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Indiana reported administering another 83,516 vaccine doses, including 38,212 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 65,931 vaccine doses, including 32,342 first doses. In all, Indiana reported it has administered 6,622,158 total doses.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 44 counties, with the best declines in Marion County, with 3,347 cases from 3,502 a week earlier; in Johnson County, with 573 cases from 690; and in Gibson County, with 139 cases from 248.

In Indiana, 300 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 213 people were reported dead.

A total of 926,604 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 15,083 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States, 42,087,432 people have tested positive and 673,763 people have died.
