Southern Minnesota farmer on the cusp of soybean harvest
Harvest is just days away for a south-central Minnesota farmer.
Andy Bakken of Albert Lea says some of his soybeans have reached maturity.
“We did plant kind of a full spectrum of beans this year, so we’ve got some 1.4’s and 1.7’s and then into the 2.0’s. We’ve got one farm that we’re going to try and do a little tiling (on), and we’ve got some hog manure, pits are starting to get full, so we’ve got to get out there.”
Some of the early varieties are coming out in Bakken’s area and he’s hearing yields are better than expected.
“Now what that means I don’t know, but I think we’re going to see a lot of variability this year. Some fields are going to yield really well (because of) heavier soils, and some are going to be a little less depending on if they caught any of the rains in a timely manner.”
Bakken plans to combine all his soybeans before switching to corn, but he says there are some local farmers harvesting corn now to take advantage of attractive basis prices.
