Who makes Newman’s Own Classic Oil and Vinegar Dressing?
I love Newman’s Own Classic Oil and Vinegar Dressing (affiliate link) mostly for the flavor and low-carb ingredients, but there a wonderful story behind the company as well. Newman’s Own is a food company founded by actor Paul Newman and author A. E. Hotchner in 1982. The company donates 100% of its after-tax profits to the Newman’s Own Foundation, a private nonprofit foundation which in turn supports various educational and charitable organizations. Even though Paul Newman died in 2008, his daughter has continued to run the company, and they have donated over $550,000,000 to charity.
What makes Newman’s Own Classic Oil and Vinegar so good?
Truthfully, I don’t eat this dressing much as just a salad dressing poured out of the bottle. But I think this classic oil and vinegar dressing has the perfect flavor to use as a starting point in a recipe. To me it has a perfect balance of oil and vinegar so neither overpowers the other. And with only one carb in two tablespoons, it’s a great option for a carb-conscious ingredient.

I’ve used Newman’s Own Salad Dressing for years. I love their mission, & of course, the dressings are super tasty. I now have to make my own homemade salad dressings, since I need to cut down on my intake of sodium. It would be nice if this company came out with at least a few of their dressings which are lower in sodium. BTW, I’ve also used salad dressings in my cooking, other than just on a salad. My mom has done that for years. What a great shortcut to achieve incredible flavor!
I admit I haven’t paid much attention to the sodium amount (maybe because I use this most often as an ingredient rather than as a salad dressing). But you might consider writing to them to ask for a low-sodium version. It does seem like a great company.
