Biofuels industry says executive order on vehicles falls short of climate goals
President Biden has unveiled a plan to make half of all new vehicles zero emissions by the end of the decade.
American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) CEO Brian Jennings says the executive order won’t meet climate sustainability goals. “I don’t want to overreact to this pledge because it’s a voluntary pledge much like a New Year’s resolution.”
He tells Brownfield low carbon ethanol will make meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. “We have ethanol in abundant volume today at a very low cast that also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent compared to gasoline so why would we not also want to capitalize on that.”
The executive order includes battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or fuel cell electric vehicles.
Jennings says coal and natural gas are required to build parts of electrical vehicles like the batteries. “That significantly increases greenhouse gas emissions associated with those electric vehicles.”
The Renewable Fuels Association has released a statement saying RFA agrees aggressive steps need to be taken to reduce GHG emissions but “putting all our eggs into one technology basket” won’t have much of an impact and urges an “all-of-the-above” approach.
