Indiana’s corn crop is looking good

Corn conditions in Indiana are holding steady, according to Purdue University Extension Corn Specialist Dan Quinn.

“Overall, the corn is looking pretty good,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he’s keeping an eye out for diseases.

“The number one (disease) right now is tar spot which has moved in the last couple of years and is prevalent when leaves are continually wet,” he says. “…getting out in fields, scouting for disease pressure, seeing where the disease potentially is, and understanding what the history of diseases in your fields are important.”

Quinn says he’s heard from several farmers who say this year’s corn crop is the best they’ve ever had.

“So, hopefully we can keep it that way and we’ll continue to scout for disease pressure and any other issues,” he says.

Quinn joined the Purdue team as extension corn specialist in May. He grew up in a farming family in Central Michigan. He earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree at Michigan State University, and received his Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky.
