NY Clears Thousands Of Rent-Relief Cases Just Before Deadline

New York State met its Deadline of Clearing more than 4,800 Rent-Relief Cases, just in the nick of time.

The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), which is Running the Covid-19 Pandemic Rent-Relief Program, said it Processed all 4,828 Pending, Reviewed and Verified Cases “within the time frame designated last week.”

“While most of these cases will ultimately result in payment, others will have funding set aside in case the associated landlord has not yet opted to participate in the program, and they will be protected from eviction in the meantime,” said Justin Mason, a Spokesman for the Agency.

Nonparticipation from Landlords and Technical Issues prevented Payments from going out on roughly a Quarter of the 4,828 Applications, but Money still will Ultimately go to most of those Applicants as well, according to the OTDA.

The Agency has given out more than $20.3 Million in Payments overall, including $13.3 Million, Wednesday.

The Latest required Monthly Report on the Rent-Relief Program had Not been Posted as of Early Wednesday afternoon.

Many Landlord and Tenant Groups have Derided the recent Effort to Streamline the Rent-Relief Program as Inadequate.

Although the State has Added more Staff Members to help Administer it and more Money has made it out the door, the Bulk of the Changes are just Minor Relaxations of Document Requirements, they said, and do Not address the Program’s Core Issues.

The Assembly is Scheduled to hold an Aug. 10th Hearing to look into the Program, and the State Senate is set to follow suit Aug. 19th.

New York’s Eviction Moratorium is still set to Expire.. Multiple Organizations have said a Successful Rent-Relief Program would be the most important Factor in staving off a Wave of Evictions and a Spike in Homelessness once that occurs.
