Ohio to become home of large-scale GE salmon farm

Massachusetts-based AquaBounty Technologies has announced Pioneer, Ohio as the location for a $200 million large-scale genetically engineered salmon farm.

The land-based aquaculture company says the farm will be its first large-scale commercial facility, with an expected annual production capacity of 10,000 metric tons.

The company has a land-based fish farm in east central Indiana and began raising GE Atlantic salmon in 2019. That farm has an annual production capacity of 1,200 metric tons.

Construction on the 479,000 square-foot facility is expected to begin later this year, and AquaBounty says commercial stocking of salmon should begin in 2023. The farm is expected to bring more than 100 new jobs to northwest Ohio.

AquaBounty’s genetically modified salmon got approval for human consumption in 2015.

The company’s genetically engineered salmon program is based on a single, specific molecular modification in salmon that results in more rapid growth in early development. AquaBounty says it is raising salmon free of antibiotics and other contaminants in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems designed to prevent disease and include multiple levels of fish containment to protect wild fish populations.
