A smoky haze sits over the city on Friday, July 30, 2021 in Sioux Falls. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has created an unhealthy air quality in areas as it travels south.

The smoke-filled skies were supposed to subside on Thursday, but the haze has stuck around for a second day Friday.

Large wildfires near Lake Winnipeg in Canada are the cause of the hazy skies in Sioux Falls. They've been sending smoke southbound and while the smoke was supposed to roll through the Sioux Falls area throughout Thursday, residents woke up Friday morning to another hazy sky.

Due to the fairly light winds across the area, the smoke that came down from Manitoba Thursday will remain in place throughout Friday. Rainfall Friday morning into the afternoon hours will likely scour out the smoke, but those sensitive to smoke should take precautions, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls said.

What you should do to limit exposure in unhealthy air quality

Along with reduced visibility and an odor, the wildfire in the air makes for a drop in air quality, according to the NWS.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens can take any of these steps to reduce exposure, according to AirNow.gov:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Everyone else can take any of these steps to reduce exposure, according to AirNow.gov:

  • Choose less strenuous activities, like walking instead of running, so you don’t breathe as hard.
  • Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
  • Be active outdoors when the air quality is better.
