Stuff the Bus school supply drive to be held Aug. 6-7

Thrive in Southern New Mexico annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive was scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7 in the Walmart Supercenter parking lot at East First St. and New York Ave..

The event will begin and noon and close at 6 p.m. on Friday; it will open at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The event was scheduled to be held over Tax Free Weekend. It may local athletes in addition to an Alamogordo Public Schools school bus, Thrive spokeswoman Stephanie Hale said.

"We're very much aware that (Alamogordo Public School) starts that Friday, Aug. 6 but we still want to collect as many school supplies and monetary donations so that we'll have them throughout the year," Hale said. "We're just excited to be able to do it again."

Stuff the Bus sponsors are Thrive in Southern New Mexico, Love, INC; Grace United Methodist Church and Walmart.

Other Thrive events coming up include the Nonprofit Agency Fair from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2 at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center 's new conference center off Fairgrounds Road.

The Nonprofit Agency Fair will include booths from all of Thrive's partner agencies, Hale said.

Thrive in Southern New Mexico was known as United Way of Otero County until 2017 when it rebranded to be more locally oriented.

Another upcoming event is Thrive's 30th annual Day of Caring on Sept. 10 where volunteers go to predetermined work sites to do chores for senior citizens and veterans.
