Holloman Air Force Base Force Support Squadron will host a job fair at Sgt. Willie Estrada Memorial Civic Center on Aug. 24.

"The good thing about these positions is they are entry level positions," Holloman Air Force Base Civilian Personnel Flight Chief Elva Chavez. "It's a way to get your foot in the door into the federal workforce."

The job fair, the third of three this summer, has computers onsite so that applicants can have assistance filling out applications on usajobs.gov, the federal jobs website, where all Holloman Air Force Base and other federal positions are listed.

"The staff we have working the job fair are there to help the applicant get their resume in the (usajobs.gov) system," Chavez said. "It's helpful if anybody that walks in especially if they're not familiar with usajobs.gov, it'll help how to apply for a job."

Holloman Air Force Base has several job openings non-appropriated fund, or NAF, employees. This means that the positions are paid based on the amount of money generated by the business where they are working.

These jobs fall under the umbrella of federal employment and are not considered federal civil service. NAF employees can apply for civil service positions after one year of employment as a NAF employee.

Currently, only child and youth positions are being hired as regular scheduled employees where the worker works between 20 and 40 hours per week depending on work requirements and are entitled to receive benefits such as paid leave.

Other NAF positions are called flexible where the worker gets in up to 40 hours per week depending on the job's needs.

These openings include child and youth program assistants, cook at the Oasis Bar and Grill, custodial and laborer positions in lodging, recreational aide and assistants at the base community center and a cashier and the base theater.

The holders of these positions can transfer to federal civil service if they qualify and if they so choose.

NAF job requirements are for the applicant to have either a GED diploma or high school diploma and for the applicant to be 17 years of age or older.

Civil service positions are paid for through congressional budget appropriations, Chavez said.
