Home explosion kills 1 in Jefferson County, damages surrounding homes

ROME – One person was killed in an explosion that leveled a home and damaged several others Tuesday in a residential neighborhood in this Jefferson County community.

Jeffrey Parker, chief deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said the other occupant of the residence was not at the Water Street home during the explosion at 1:51 p.m. Tuesday. 

No information about the cause of the explosion or the name of the victim was immediately released. The state Fire Marshal's office and Division of Criminal Investigation were on the scene.

An explosion at a home in the Jefferson County community of Rome killed one person and damaged surrounding residences.

Parker said first responders encountered a large debris field and an active fire at the scene.

Surrounding homes suffered damage including broken windows and siding hanging loose. 

The neighborhood was not evacuated put power has been shut off to surrounding homes.
