Vanderburgh County's COVID cases up 74.6%; Indiana cases surge 38.2%

New coronavirus cases rose nearly 75% in Vanderburgh County in the week ending Sunday. Statewide that number rose 38.2% as 4,285 cases were reported. The previous week had 3,101 Hoosiers newly diagnosed with the virus that causes COVID-19.

Vanderburgh was among the top three counties in the state with the worst weekly increase of positive cases.

Indiana ranked 25th among states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States increased 61% from the week before, with 363,801 cases reported.

With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 1.18% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 49 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Vanderburgh County reported 199 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 114 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 23,106 cases and 404 deaths.

Warrick County reported 72 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 45 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 8,031 cases and 157 deaths.

Posey County reported 23 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 16 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 2,804 cases and 35 deaths.

Gibson County reported 41 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 49 cases. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 4,606 cases and 96 deaths.

Dubois County reported 25 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 10 cases. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 6,267 cases and 118 deaths.

Spencer County reported 18 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported nine cases. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 2,375 cases and 31 deaths.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Scott, Fountain and Tipton counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 635 cases; Allen County, with 391 cases; and Hamilton County, with 199. Weekly case counts rose in 69 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Marion, Allen and Vanderburgh counties.

Indiana ranked 39th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 46.7% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 56.8%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Indiana reported administering another 64,833 vaccine doses, including 35,380 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 55,514 vaccine doses, including 27,018 first doses. In all, Indiana reported it has administered 6,017,619 total doses.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 18 counties, with the best declines in Jasper, Knox and Martin counties.

In Indiana, 25 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 26 people were reported dead.

A total of 764,448 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 13,965 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the U.S., 34,443,761 people have tested positive and 610,891 people have died.
