Interstate 83 commuters will see more roadwork on the highway as a year-long project gets underway.

Crews will resurface 6.6 miles of the interstate in-between the North George Street and Strinestown interchanges, Exits 22 and 28. The project limits are between Locust Lane and Canal Road in Manchester Township, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The work will include the ramps at the Emigsville interchange.

The nearly $5.3 million project kicked off on Sunday night and is expected to be finished by August 2022, PennDOT says. It includes removal of the old asphalt and resurfacing of the highway.

Crews will be working at night Sunday through Thursday, with possible weekend extensions, according to PennDOT.

The resurfacing project is north of the planned I-83 widening. PennDOT intends to widen the interstate from four to six lanes between the North George and Market streets interchanges, Exits 22 to 19, in the coming years.

In preparation for the widening, crews have been constructing a new northbound on-ramp at the North George Street interchange
