Central Pennsylvania nonprofits can receive up to $100,000 in grants from the Gannett Foundation's annual "A Community Thrives" fundraising program.

Organizations can receive one of 15 national grants of up to $100,000 or one of more than 100 community operating grants starting at $2,500 selected by regional committees of leaders of Gannett's USA TODAY Network. The network encompasses more than 250 news sites in 46 states, including the York Daily Record, the Lebanon Daily News, the Chambersburg Public Opinion, the Waynesboro Record Herald, the Greencastle Echo-Pilot and the Evening Sun of Hanover.

To be eligible, nonprofits must first participate in an online crowdsourcing campaign, and raise a minimum of $3,000 or $6,000 depending on the organization's size.

The following central Pennsylvania nonprofits have applied for the grants. Those wishing to donate to help them make their goals in the crowdsourcing campaign can visit the link for each organization. acommunitythrives.mightycause.com

The Nobody's Cats Foundation

Dedicating to reducing domestic free-roaming feline populations in south-central PA, The Nobody's Cats Foundation is working to prevent suffering among cats. Located in Camp Hill, this non-profit organization saves cats in 15 south-central PA counties, including York. Southcentral Camp Cadet Incorporated

Each summer, approximately 100 teenagers attend Southcentral Camp Cadet, located on the York College campus in York and hosted by the Pennsylvania State Police - Troop H. The goal of the camp is to promote positive relationships between law enforcement and youth, focusing on self-esteem and confidence building, as well as exposing attendees to careers in law enforcement.

This free camp is open to children aged 13-15 who reside in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Perry and York counties. It is operated and staffed solely by local and state law enforcement officers who volunteer their time to attend the program.

To guarantee all cadets can attend regardless of financial status, the camp relies on donations. Fundraising is conducted throughout the year to ensure families can send their child to camp free of charge.

Sponsoring one cadet to attend the program costs $500 and the money is used towards covering all costs associated with camp, such as food, lodgings, uniforms, activities and more.

York XL

Established in 2018 with the goal of helping people see a path to living a healthy and successful life in their neighborhood, York XL has created a program of different platforms to help local communities advocate for themselves, improve their own neighborhoods, build wealth, seek educational opportunities and enrich their lives through affordable recreation.

The various platforms include:

  • EPIC Wealth Builders - a program that gives school aged children the ability to earn and learn about wealth by participating in individual and group fundraisers.
  • EPIC Markets - creates an oasis of economic opportunities in otherwise economic deserts by providing a monthly neighborhood market which features goods and services that people usually travel outside of their neighborhoods to get.
  • EPIC Incubator - provides a fiscal sponsorship program for already existing projects/organizations that want to expand their reach into city neighborhoods. Ideas will be fiscally sponsored by York XL until they are mature enough to function on their own.
  • EPIC Gardens - creates a matrix of themed gardens, or gardenscapes, that will connect neighborhood residents to one another and to other neighborhoods.

Each of these are funded through community donations and other fundraising efforts.
