  • Walmart has a new back-to-school option for parents of young girls: the Justice brand is back.
  • Justice, geared toward girls 6 to 12, closed its stores as part of Ascena Retail Group's bankruptcy.
  • Walmart will sell more than 140 Justice products in 2,400 stores nationwide and online.

The Justice tween brand is making a comeback in time for the back-to-school shopping season with the help of the world’s largest retailer.

Walmart will sell more than 140 Justice products in 2,400 stores nationwide and online starting Thursday, company officials shared exclusively with USA TODAY. The collection includes clothing, jewelry, accessories, bedding and bath, backpacks, stationery, skateboards and tech accessories.

Justice, geared toward girls 6 to 12, closed its 826 stores as part of the summer 2020 bankruptcy of former parent company Ascena Retail Group.

"We think customers will be excited that Justice is back and at a much broader scale," Denise Incandela, Walmart executive vice president of apparel and private brands, told USA TODAY. "It’s the same quality that parents and girls have come to trust – now at Walmart’s accessible prices."

Walmart quietly tested Justice in the spring with a curated collection at 1,200 stores and online. Incandela said most of the spring assortment was sold on Walmart.com in a few days.

"We think customers will love the athleisure separates, including fashion leggings and graphic tees starting at $8, tie dye sweatshirts and matching joggers starting at $13, and oversized hoodies starting at $18," Incandela said, noting bed and bath products range from $20 to $40.

Bluestar Alliance – which also owns and manages consumer brands including Hurley, bebe, Tahari and Brookstone – purchased the Justice brand from Ascena in November 2020 and relaunched the ShopJustice.com website in the spring.

Ralph Gindi, president of the alliance, said bringing Justice to Walmart is a natural fit and will allow more consumers to grow up with the brand.

"Justice was previously available in 1,000 brand stores and now it is carried in 2,400 Walmart stores nationwide," Gindi said in a statement. "This is truly an exciting moment for Justice and its core consumer.”

New styles will be added seasonally and shoes and pet accessories will debut at Walmart in September.

Walmart already plans to expand to another 1,400 stores by spring 2022, which will bring the store count to 3,800, Incandela told USA TODAY.

"Like the Gap Home launch at Walmart, this is another example where retailers and brands are collaborating to reach more customers," Incandela said. "There’s no bigger opportunity to do that than through Walmart’s phenomenal scale and customer reach."

In June, Walmart and Gap have teamed up to launch the new home essentials brand that is for sale exclusively on Walmart.com.

The new Justice collection is available at Walmart.com/justicegirls, which also has a locator search to find stores selling the brand.
