Hot, dry weather in Nebraska had slight effect on crops last week

The USDA’s crop condition and progress report shows dry and hot weather slightly impacted Nebraska corn and soybeans this week.

The report says corn condition is rated 83 percent good-to-excellent down one percent from last week.

Logan Govier of Broken Bow tells Brownfield his corn is mostly in good shape. “Things are looking pretty good as long as we’re able to pump water on the dryland crop but with the cooler temps they look a little bit better they are running out of water and suffering a little bit.”

Soybeans are 83 percent rated good-to excellent, down four percent from last week.  Five percent of the crop has bloomed, which is 14 percent behind last year.

Govier says his soybeans are growing faster than normal. “We’re probably setting the second and third trifoliate on most of ours right now and I’d say they look a little better than the dryland corn does.”

The USDA says 59 percent of winter wheat is rated good-to-excellent with sorghum rated 82 percent good-to-excellent with one percent of the crop headed.

Oats are rated 58 percent good-to-excellent.

Ninety-two percent of dry edible beans have been planted with 70 percent of the crop emerged.

Pasture and range conditions are rated 29 percent good-to-excellent.

Topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies are both 57 percent adequate.
