South Dakota and Indiana continue to dominate milk production

Milk production continues to increase with May numbers up more than four percent on the year, the largest month to month increase for 2021.

USDA says production in the U.S. for the month totaled nearly 20 billion pounds with production per cow up 61 pounds from last year.  

The herd size was up 145,000 head on the year and 5,000 from last month. 

South Dakota production grew by more than 14 percent followed by Indiana, up more than 12 percent. and Texas was up nearly 11 percent.  Virginia and Arizona were the only two states to report declining production. Michigan remains the leader in per cow output.
