49 years ago, Tropical Storm Agnes pounded Pa. — check out these photos of the flooding

Jim McClure

Nothing brings back memories like those drenching late-June days when Tropical Storm Agnes visited York County and the region. Who could ever forget that pounding in which the heavens opened and 13 inches of ran poured down in a single day — June 22, 1972.

In the past 50 years, all flooding in the York County region is compared to that caused by the torrential wrath of Agnes.

So, let's consider two sets of numbers.

First, the rainfall:

  • 16.02: Inches of rain that fell
  • 13.5: Inches that fell within a 24-hour period
  • 4: Number of people who died in York County.
  • And the second set: The river stage.

Here are the nine times the Susquehanna crested at major flood levels in Marietta across the river in Lancaster County:

  • 64.54 inches: June 23, 1972
  • 60.73 inches: March 19, 1936
  • 58.30 inches: June 2, 1889
  • 58.16 inches: Sept. 9, 2011
  • 56.80 inches: January 21, 1996
  • 56.28 inches: Sept. 20, 2004
  • 55.73 inches: Sept. 27, 1975
  • 54.90 inches: May 29, 1946
  • 54.03 inches: March 12, 1964
