Lower premiums through manure certification

Farmers and manure applicators could see up to a 10 percent reduction in insurance premiums through the Michigan Manure Hauler Certification Program.

Charles Gould with Michigan State University Extension says there are three levels to certifications and insurance premium reductions with Michigan Farm Bureau Insurance correlate with each level.

“For each part, there’s two things that have to be completed: the educational piece and the manure application inspection piece,” he explains.

Gould says the goal of the program is to create greater awareness of manuring hauling environmental risks and in turn reduce equipment failures and insurance claims.  He points to a recent study of a similar program in Wisconsin.

“The difference is pretty stark,” he says.  “Certified manure applicators have less vehicle and tractor problems, they have less human caused error, less problems with their manure application equipment.”

He says while other states have mandatory programs and the insurance benefit in Michigan is meant to incentivize voluntary efforts.
