Dairy industry tackles feed emissions

The U.S. dairy industry’s Net Zero Initiative has been awarded a $10 million grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research which is kickstarting on-farm pilot programs to reduce feed emissions.

Nestle, the dairy industry including Newtrient, and in-kind support are matching the grant for a total of $23.2 million to create measure-based assessments of dairy’s greenhouse gas footprint for feed production and lay groundwork for new carbon market opportunities.

Caleb Harper with the Dairy to Scale for Good part of the effort says feed represents about one third of dairy’s emissions and the research will measure the effectiveness of conservation practices.

“This is going to be a huge area of innovation, an area where we can start generating carbon credits that are valued by markets, and in addition to that reducing a third of our emission profile and increasing soil health, and soil’s ability to retain water,” he says.

The six-year projects will be carried out over four major dairy regions and collaborate with the Soil Health Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and other partners.
