Leaders recommit to USMCA goals in first tri-lateral meeting

The first-ever meeting of top trade officials*** in the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement has been held where they recommitted to fully implementing, enforcing, and fulfilling the trade pact throughout the life of the USMCA.

Daniel Watson, assistant U.S. Trade Representative for the Western Hemisphere, told reporters the dairy trade issues with Canada remain a priority.

“We continue to make our concerns known to them about their implementation of the dairy TRQs and, of course, we are looking forward to keeping in touch with them on those issues.”

Watson says the three trade ministers also agreed to commit to using all the tools in the pact to enforce labor standards. The USTR recently filed a rapid-response labor complaint against Mexico, “And in particular, using those tools in a collaborative way because we think that as Mexico has responded it’s demonstrated how well this can be used by both countries.”

The parties also agreed to support environmental policies in the USMCA.

The USMCA committee on Small to Medium-Sized Enterprises will convene for their first ever dialogue in San Antonio, Texas, in October 13th and 14th.
