During the first half of the week, heavy showers and locally severe thunderstorms will persist across the central and southern Plains. In eastern Texas and portions of neighboring states, 5-day rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches or more could lead to flash flooding and rising rivers. Locally heavy (1 to 2 inches or more) rain may extend eastward into the middle and lower Mississippi Valley and northward across the central Plains. In contrast, little or no precipitation will fall during the next 5 days in the middle and southern Atlantic States and from California into the Southwest. During the mid- to late-week period, beneficial precipitation (locally an inch or more) may provide limited relief in drought-affected areas across the northern U.S. As the week progresses, markedly cooler air will overspread the northern Plains and the Northwest, while early-season heat will develop across much of the eastern U.S.
