Reading Lately [All the Feels]

Wow. I’ve read some powerful books lately! Both fiction and non fiction. Books that have made me feel all the feels. They’ve been amazing but I’m thinking I may need to lighten things up next month so I can stop being a puddle of tears on my floor.

Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson

I read this in two days. I couldn’t put it down and took it everywhere I went. I cried and cried through this book. As soon as I was finished I picked up the audio book and gave it to my husband to listen to. Incredibly powerful read. I’m so incredibly thankful that Stevenson wrote this and that I got the opportunity to learn from it. There is so much work to be done still.

An unforgettable true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to end mass incarceration in America — from one of the most inspiring lawyers of our time.

The Winter of the Witch, Katherine Arden

I also finished the Winternight Trilogy and it was everything I hoped it would be! This whole world has completely swept me up in its magic. I love the characters. I love the setting. I love the intertwining folklore. An absolutely gorgeous tale.

Now Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers—and for someone to blame. Vasya finds herself alone, beset on all sides. The Grand Prince is in a rage, choosing allies that will lead him on a path to war and ruin. A wicked demon returns, stronger than ever and determined to spread chaos. Caught at the center of the conflict is Vasya, who finds the fate of two worlds resting on her shoulders. Her destiny uncertain, Vasya will uncover surprising truths about herself and her history as she desperately tries to save Russia, Morozko, and the magical world she treasures. But she may not be able to save them all.

Ark, Veronica Roth

Lastly, I’ve been working my way through a series of Audible Original short stories. It’s called the Forward Collection and it’s curated by Blake Crouch. I’ve listened to four of the six stories so far and have enjoyed them all. The other day I finished Ark, Veronica Roth and found myself completely immersed in the simple story. It’s got mixed reviews but personally, I liked it. Others called it ‘boring.’ I found it sad and a little bit melancholy but I think that’s what made me really think about it. I highly recommend the others in the series!

It’s only two weeks before an asteroid turns home to dust. Though most of Earth has already been evacuated, it’s Samantha’s job to catalog plant samples for the survivors’ unknowable journey beyond. Preparing to stay behind and watch the world end, she makes a final human connection. As certain doom hurtles nearer, the unexpected and beautiful potential for the future begins to flower.
