It was fascinating reading up about why the stamps are being issued recognizing the heritage breeds. In writing about these new Forever stamps the background around them really made it helpful in understanding their importance.

The Livestock Conservancy - Learn more about the 10 heritage breeds on the stamp

Firstly, over at the Livestock Conservancy they have individual links for learning more about the each of the ten heritage breeds in these new stamps.

Secondly, I’m including an image of the listing of each of them along with clickable link for reading further.

Thirdly, and the part that most had my attention, was reading in their post the following:

“Heritage breeds are especially important for small-scale, sustainable frams, which the public can support by purchaing their products, including milk, cheese, eggs, fibers, and meat. “

“… The breeds on the stamps were picked by The Livestock Conservancy’s Technical Advisor D. Phillip Sponenberg, DVM. …”

One of the things I enjoy about blogging here is the continually learning new things. For example, in writing today’s post, I was not familiar with the term Heritage Breed. And now I’ll be thinking of “pre-industrial farm animals” when using these new stamps.

Be sure to explore the Pick-A-Breed page at The Livestock Conservancy. Their site offers many resources.

Not only is the First Day of Issue ceremony scheduled for May 17, in parallel the stamps also become available for sale nationwide.  The sheet of 20 #HeritageBreedsStamps sells for $11.00.  Furthermore, it is available for pre-ordering (and shortly will be available for purchase) at the USPS Postal Store. Here is the link to SKU 480404.

Next, this excerpt is from the USPS National News Release, April 16, 2021, “Heritage Breeds Live on in New Forever Stamps”.

“… The U.S. Postal Service pays homage to the priceless genetic diversity of heritage breeds with 10 different Forever stamps showcasing these unusual and culturally valuable animals.”

… These pre-industrial breeds, known as heritage breeds, possess a priceless genetic diversity that can help farmers, and society at large, adapt to variable conditions, ranging from new consumer tastes to varied landscapes.

The pane of 20 stamps … 10 heritage breeds: the American Mammoth Jackstock donkey, the Narragansett turkey, the Cayuga duck, the San Clemente Island goat, the Mulefoot hog, the Cotton Patch goose, the American Cream draft horse, the Barbados Blackbelly sheep, the Milking Devon cow and the Wyandotte chicken.”

Lastly, in the background it was especially helpful reading more about them.

“With the industrialization of farming, a few breeds of livestock have been standardized for maximum productivity. This expansive growth of the few breeds resulted in the critical endangerment of many other breeds, with several becoming extinct. These pre-industrial breeds, known as heritage breeds, possess a priceless genetic diversity that can help farmers, and society at large, adapt to variable conditions, ranging from new consumer tastes to varied landscapes.”

Thinking of the State and County Fairs Stamps

In conclusion, I’m really excited about the new Heritage Breeds Stamps USPS!

Additionally, I’m finding myself thinking of what other current stamps for pairing with the #HeritageBreedsStamps. One such item is the State and County Fairs Stamps. As you’ll recall there are four stamp designs making up the fair scene. Has it really been almost two years since blogging about them at the time of their announcement?

See you back here on Wednesday showcasing something very cool and timely for letter writing enthusiasts!
