Residents of Lincoln County are warned of scam in which threats of property liens, wage garnishment and property and fund seizures are used to elicit funds from victims.

Beverly Calaway, treasurer of Lincoln County, asked any resident who believes they have been targeted to report it to her office.

Calaway said the scam is perpetrated via mail, typically a letter which references a "distraint warrant" and threatens a lien or levy based on false claims of overdue taxes.

According to a news release from the Treasurer's Office, the letter may contain an official sounding name like "Tax Processing Unit" or "Lincoln County Public Judgement Records."

The Lincoln County Treasurers Office can be reached at 575-648-2397, extension 7 to report the scam.
