High feed costs pressuring turkey growers

Turkey growers are struggling to make money with feed costs at multi-year highs.

Minnesota Turkey Growers Association director Sarah Anderson tells Brownfield most turkey diets consist of corn and soybeans.

“So the higher prices that we’re seeing in grain feeds obviously put a ding in your wallet for sure.”

She says there’s concern feed costs could be as much as 20 percent higher by the end of the year.

“And that really hurts, especially after the year that we had last year with the pandemic and all of the challenges that presented too. It’s kind of like you had the flood the first year, and then the second year you get hit with a tornado. That’s sort of what it feels like right now.”

Anderson says there aren’t many alternatives for turkey growers other than trying to be as diversified as possible.
