President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and the painful economic crisis it created with some ambitious stimulus/economic relief programs that have been applauded by the New York Times' Paul Krugman and other liberal economists. But Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia believes that social spending is hurting small businesses in the United States.

When the far-right congresswoman and QAnon supporter visited Twitter on Monday, she claimed that "government handouts" and "socialism," not the worst global pandemic in over 100 years, are what is hurting businesses in the United States. She tweeted:

Greene is being inundated with negative reactions, from Twitter users to Occupy Democrats — whose Rob Haffey laid out some of the flaws in her argument in an article posted on Monday.

"As is often the case with right-wing framing," Haffey explained, "Greene's is a bad faith explanation of the labor phenomenon. Labor shortages, particularly in the restaurant industry, can be attributed to many factors that have nothing to do with laziness. Many people are still unvaccinated and afraid of contracting coronavirus in crowded restaurants where they sometimes interact with hundreds of strangers in a single day."

Haffey went on to say, "The simple solution to this so-called problem is for businesses to pay better wages. Conservatives love to prostrate themselves at the altar of the free market when it benefits them, but the moment it looks like it might help the working class, they change their tune. Nobody should be forced to work for little better than slave wages."

Here are some other reactions to Greene's tweets:
