Lawmakers urge Tai to urge Vietnam to drop tariffs

A bipartisan group of U.S. House members is urging U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to urge Vietnam to drop tariffs on U.S. pork.

Republicans Dusty Johnson of South Dakota and Darin LaHood of Illinois, along with Democrats Ron Kind of Wisconsin and California’s Jim Costa tell Tai the last few years have been extremely difficult for U.S. pork producers because of trade retaliation from Mexico and China plus pandemic supply chain disruptions.

Jen Sorenson, president of National Pork Producers says Vietnam is a significant opportunity for U.S. hog farmers but their tariffs and non-tariff barriers are unjustified “allowing global competitors to take advantage of the supply shortfall.”

Vietnam’s temporary duty reduction expired at the end of last year.

Seventy-two other lawmakers signed onto the letter
