May 9 is Mother’s Day. But when you hear stories like Desiree Ortiz’s, you begin to think that maybe the entire month of May should be dedicated to mothers.

Ortiz’s story is one of caring and perseverance and nurturing. Her story also represents and epitomizes what mothers are really all about.

Ortiz, a 38-year-old Hispanic resident of Chambersburg, is a single mother of three who works two jobs and who, just recently, purchased her first home. Ortiz also recently underwent a procedure to have a tumor removed from behind her head, and she’s waiting to hear the results of the biopsy report.

Now, all of that may sound a bit overwhelming to you and me. But for mothers like Ortiz, it’s part of the job description, it’s all in a day’s work.

“I just have to survive,” said Ortiz. “I want my kids to have better. I want to empower them. I want them to have a better childhood than I had. For them, the sky’s the limit. I don’t want them to have to work two jobs to pay the rent.”

What’s even more amazing about Ortiz’s story is that she may not have had the best role model to base her mothering approach on. Ortiz uses the inherent natural skills of empathy, compassion, and patience to raise Abe, 16, Omar, 14, and Penelope, 4, whom she refers to as her ‘princess’.

“I never wanted to be a single mom, but stuff happens,” said Ortiz. “I embrace it and try to keep moving forward. It can be stressful. I think the hardest part is not having enough time.”

Time management becomes an issue when you have to juggle child-rearing with a full-time job and a part-time job. Ortiz works 40 hours a week at Keystone Community Outreach in Chambersburg, and ten to 20 hours a week at the Five Below store in Chambersburg.

“For a Puerto Rican girl to graduate, buy her first house and be a single mom, it’s a lot,” said Ortiz. “I have hit the bottom. I’ve had depression and anxiety, and I’ve gone to jail. But I’ve also been to the top. I learn something about life every single day.”

“Quiero sobrevivir” , dice Ortiz.

“He tocado fondo. He tenido depresión, ansiedad y he ido a la cárcel. Pero también he estado en la cima. Cada día aprendo algo de la vida”.
