As debates about raising the minimum wage play out across the country, Rutter’s announced an increase to its starting wage Monday — bringing its hourly pay to $14 for all field employees.

This is the second increase the 79-store chain has announced in less than a year. It has committed more than $5 million in additional annual wages this month, and $12 million total since the end of 2020, according to a news release.

All Rutter’s employees will see a wage increase, with full-time team members earning nearly $30,000 annually. Rutter's store managers can earn up to $110,000 per year and restaurant managers up to $99,000 per year, with bonus.

With this increase, Rutter’s has raised its starting wages by 33 percent since 2019, the release stats.

“At Rutter’s, we pride ourselves on investing in our people because they’re a huge part of what makes us an industry leader,” said Scott Hartman, Rutter’s president and CEO. “We’re delighted to be in a position to increase wages yet again for our hard-working field employees, and we’re excited to continue our investments and growth in 2021.”

This announcement comes as some Pennsylvania lawmakers are pushing for a $15 minimum wage for the state. Those opposed to the wage increase have expressed concerns that paying higher wages will result in businesses having to close.

Rutter's has plans to increase business, however.

In March, the convenience store chain said it plans over $100 million in capital investments this year, which includes opening new locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. This will create up to 50 jobs for local communities. The company also intends to remodel 10 stores this year, adding beer and wine to all locations.

In early 2021, Rutter’s was named one of America’s Best Mid-Size Employers by Forbes. Currently, it employs around 2,000 people.
