Planting is nearly complete for Indiana farmer

A southwest Indiana farmer has just a few acres to go before he wraps up planting.

Mark Seib tells Brownfield he began planting at the end of March.

“Ground conditions were perfect, and we were looking into going into 80-degree weather for the whole next week so we began planting soybeans,” he says. “In the last two years our best soybeans have been those that we planted early, so we went ahead and started planting soybeans the last week of March. About five days later we started planting corn.”

He says the forecast for snow was concerning because some of his corn and soybeans have emerged. But, it only ended up getting down to 32 degrees with flurries.

“We were very blessed and pleased to find that was the case,” he says. “We also talked to our agronomist again today just to make sure that he thought everything went well with temperatures across the region and we’re feeling fairly good for such a late April cold snap.”

Seib says he’d like to see timely rains and warmer temperatures in the coming weeks.
