New York City is launching a Pilot to Identify Sites for Large-Scale Geothermal Energy Citywide.
It's an effort to Transition away from Fossil Fuels and Adopt Clean Technology for the City’s more than 1 Million Buildings.
The City is Planning to initiate a Feasibility Study to Select a Site or a Set of Sites by the End of this year.
Requirements for the Sites include being “Technically Viable,” having the most Impact on Lowering Gas usage, and offering an Affordable option.
Geothermal Energy involves Drilling beneath the Earth's surface and Drawing Heat for use in Homes or Small Power Plants.
Term Limited Mayor, Bill de Blasio (D), spoke Wednesday about Implementing more Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems.
New York City has a few Geothermal Sites that Fuel Public Buildings throughout the City:
- A Fire Station in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
- A School on Staten Island.
De Blasio said the Plan is really just to Expand these Sites as much as possible to the Rest of the city’s Infrastructure.
