Bayer carbon program now rewarding regenerative practices implemented since 2012

On Monday Bayer Crop Science announced enhancements to the company’s carbon program including eligibility for growers who have adopted strip-till, no-till or cover crops on fields on or after January 1, 2012.

Lisa Streck, Carbon Grower Program Lead for Bayer tells Brownfield that was a key piece of feedback they received from growers in the first year of the program.

“Growers who previously implemented these practices want an opportunity to participate, so we are really excited that those growers are now eligible to participate in our program.”

She says they have also restructured the program so that farmers are paid on a per acre basis.

“We will pay growers up to $9 per acre based on the practices that they implement on their farm. So, regardless of the amount of carbon sequestered the grower can count on that $9 per acre.”

The scope of the program has also significantly increased with nine new states added to the coverage area including Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska and Arkansas.  The midwestern states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio were already eligible when the program launched in 2020.

“We believe we can play a role in connecting farmers with these additional revenue streams through carbon markets. We know at the end of the day when the farmer is successful, Bayer will be successful too.”

She says their goal is to ensure a long term carbon credit market so that growers can continue to count on that potential additional revenue stream into the future.
