Missouri Soybean points out reasons to use biodiesel for spring fieldwork

The Missouri Soybean Checkoff is promoting the use of renewable soybean oil-based fuel as more tractors are in fields this spring.

As field work and planting begin, Missouri Soybean biofuels director Matt Amick says there are plenty of reasons for farmers to fuel with biodiesel beyond the fact that doing so promotes a locally grown product.

“It has increased lubricity, it has increase cetane, which allows for better, more efficient starts,” said Amick. “It will reduce the cost of maintenance of your tractors or fleet equipment, which will lead to a lower cost of ownership as well for that equipment.”

For fuel suppliers, Amick also has tips for storing and dispensing the renewable soy-based fuel.

“The main takeaway is that you want to treat your biodiesel just like your diesel fuel, with good maintenance, good practices,” said Amick. “For your employees, if there’s any employee training that you need for your staff, we offer that training to help with best practices, maintenance.”
