Strong beef exports to Japan trigger safeguard

The president and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation says beef exports to Japan could hit a little bit of a lull for the next month.

But, Dan Halstrom says doesn’t come as a surprise. “The business was so good in 2020 and into early 2021, which is the end of the Japanese fiscal year, that we triggered the safeguard,” he says.

He tells Brownfield until mid-April US frozen beef headed into Japan will see tariffs increase to 38.5% from its normal 25% rate. “What this is doing is it’s probably delaying some of the frozen product headed into Japan,” he says.  “And what we’ll see is probably when the duty goes back down in mid-April, we’ll probably see a very large number of frozen beef into Japan.”

Halstrom says demand for US beef and pork in Japan remains strong.
