Wisconsin benefits from a week of frequent light rains

A week of slow-moving light rain helped Wisconsin’s soil conditions.  USDA reporters say rainfall for the week totaled less than two inches but brought topsoil moisture up to 66% adequate and 16% surplus.  Subsoil moisture is 71% adequate and 13% surplus.

USDA says about 20% of spring tillage is finished, which is about 13 days ahead of average.

Farmers concentrated on tillage, manure application, and some oats seeding which is now 19% complete.  Wisconsin is now past the April 11th earliest crop insurance planting date for corn, but USDA reporters recorded no corn planting activity.  The Soybean early-planting date for crop insurance is April 26th.

Wisconsin’s potato growers are planting wherever possible.  USDA says 6% of the crop is planted, as planters were very active in the central sands region.

Winter wheat is improving, with 75% now rated good to excellent after the rains.  Pasture conditions also improved.
