Nearly $6 million construction project on San Angelo's Southwest Boulevard starts Monday

A two-phase plan to improve Southwest Boulevard in San Angelo is set to begin on Monday, April 12, 2021.

SAN ANGELO — A nearly $6 million road construction project is about to begin in San Angelo on Monday, according to a city news release.

On Monday, April 12, 2021, the Southwest Boulevard project will begin. The project is expected to take two-and-a-half years with a price tag of $5,925,288.67. It will be done in two phases.

In Phase A, the area from Twin Mountain Drive to Rockbrook Drive will be milled and overlaid. Here's what this phase will include:

  • Full reconstruction of the Southland-Southwest intersection and railroad crossing near Lamar Elementary.
  • Sidewalk and pedestrian improvements to Twin Mountain Drive and Dominion Ridge Drive will also get sidewalks and pedestrian improvements.

Phase B will begin at Rockbrook Drive and end by Cavender's at the Houston Harte Expressway frontage road. Here's what it will include:

  • A mill and overlay from Rockbrook Drive to Sherwood Way.
  • Full reconstruction of road from Sherwood Way to Houston Harte frontage road.
  • Full reconstruction of low water crossing adjacent to Hobby Lobby.
  • Sunset Boulevard intersection reconstruction.
  • Improvement to the low water crossing adjacent to McDonald's.
  • Installation of ​larger conveyance structures underneath the roadway, as well as the total crossing being raised 2 to 2.5 feet.​​​​​​

Reece Albert Inc. is the contractor for the project, which is part of the Capital Improvement Plan for for street rehabilitation/reconstruction approved in 2015. The Capital Improvement Plan spans 10 years and cost $80 million, according to the release.
