Farmer gearing up for planting

A cold and wet February gave way to a mild March and April is shaping up to provide ideal planting conditions.

Patty Mann grows corn and soybeans in northwestern Ohio.

“We’re much above normal on our temps and I would say soil moisture is adequate,” she says. “We’re looking to where if we get into next week, we might be able to get some crops in.”

She tells Brownfield fieldwork is underway.

“We worked a field of corn stalks yesterday or made a couple of passes to see if a tillage piece of equipment was set up correctly and it looked nice and dry,” she says. “I think we could have planted beans in it but not just yet.”

Mann says rain is in the forecast for the rest of the week and they’ll likely begin planting later in April.
