Bystanders pull man from burning car, after confused man drives 300 feet of the road

On March 6, a man was rescued by bystanders when his car went 300 feet off a West Manheim Township road and began to catch fire, according to officials.

At 12:19 p.m., crews were called to the scene at 2300 block of Black Rock Road in West Manheim Township, according to York County 911 records.

According to Pleasant Hill Fire Chief Ted Clousher, the vehicle appears to have been driving southbound on Black Rock Road when it went off the roadway and drove an estimated 300 feet through a field, ending up crashing into a hedgerow. 

After the crash, multiple bystanders appeared on the scene, along with one with a fire extinguisher, said Clousher. Those bystanders found the driver still in the vehicle, with a fire in the engine compartment. The bystanders quickly removed the man and extinguished the fire with their extinguisher.

Later as the firefighters arrived, the man was found lying next to the car, confused and lethargic, Clousher said. It's unclear why the man left the roadway. 

The driver was taken to York Hospital by ground ambulance.

West Manheim Township police continue to investigate the crash.
