Minnesota farmer not concerned about losing out on carbon “extra credit”

A farmer who has spent the past decade reducing tillage and adding cover crops is not concerned about the “additionality” of carbon markets.

Bryan Biegler of Lake Wilson says he expects programs to emerge that compensate farmers for conservation work that’s already been done.

“I think there will definitely be opportunities down the road for everyone to get involved if we want.”

“Additionality” is a term often associated with carbon markets that refers to the need for an additional practice to be implemented for proof of carbon offset.

Biegler, who is currently vice president of the Minnesota Corn Growers, tells Brownfield the carbon market is sort of like the Wild West right now.

“I don’t think anybody knows for sure what’s happening. There’s a lot of programs out there, and a long list of different companies.”

Biegler says he began strip-tilling nine years ago and began using cover crops the next year.  He still strip-tills corn but is no-till for soybeans.
