Michigan FFA President reflects on year of service during COVID for FFA Week

Learning by doing has been a difficult motto to uphold for FFA members during the coronavirus pandemic.

Michigan FFA state president Alex Scovill tells Brownfield a week after his state officer team was voted into office, the pandemic closed down any sense of normalcy for the year.

“This past year as a state officer has definitely not been what we expected, but we’re getting through it,” he says.

Scovill says while some aspects of the organization have strengthened in a virtual format, the personal relationships and networking, which has been most meaningful to him, has suffered.

“We’ve definitely been able to reach more members but I’m afraid the reach that we’ve been having with those members has been less impactful,” he says.

For National FFA Week, the Laingsburg native says the association will be using social media to educate about agriculture and recognize individual and partner contributions.

Scovill is a first-year student at Michigan State University studying agriscience education.

  • It is great to see FFA members making the best of a challenging year. Thank you for making the time to highlight the future of agriculture.
