Prospects News & Rumors: Dostal, Jarvis & Farrell

Anaheim Ducks prospect Lukas Dostal has dominated the American Hockey League since arriving in North America. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Seth Jarvi has started his professional hockey career with goals in four straight games, and Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell breaks the USHL point-streak record after recording a point in 24 straight games.

Dostal Settling in Fast in North America

Ducks prospect Lukas Dostal has made a seamless transition from playing in the Finnish Liiga to the AHL. The 20-year old has backstopped the San Diego Gulls to three straight victories and produced back-to-back 40-save performances. Through three games, he has a 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average (GAA) and a .956 save percentage (SV%). He leads all AHL netminders in wins and ranks in the top four in both GAA and SV%. The Czech Republic native was awarded the Urpo Ylönen Award as the league’s best goaltender after an impressive 2019-20 season when he finished with a 27-8-6 record, a .928 SV%, and a 1.78 GAA.

He began the 2020-21 season with Ilves in the Liiga and picked up right where he left off. He posted a 10-1-0 record with a 1.64 GAA and a .941 SV%. He led the league in all three categories before being recalled from loan by the Ducks. It no surprise that Dostal is off to a hot start. In his last 53 games of pro hockey, split between Finland and North America, he has won 40 for an absurd 40-9-6 record. The Ducks already boast one of the league’s top goaltenders in John Gibson, and now they have one of the best young netminders in their system as well.

Jarvis Opens Season With Goal Streak

Hurricanes prospect Seth Jarvis has now scored in four straight games to start his professional career. He leads the AHL in both goals and points and ranks second with 13 shots on goal. Through four games, he has four goals and two assists. Three of his goals were scored on the power play, which leads the league as well. Drafted 13th overall in 2020, he spent the 2019-20 season in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winterhawks, where he finished second in league scoring with 42 goals and 56 assists in 56 games.

He represented Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and posted two goals and two assists in five games en route to the silver medal. He was also named to the WHL West First All-Star Team and WHL Most Sportsmanlike Player for the 2019-20 season. The Hurricanes will have a decision to make once the WHL resumes their 24-game season. Jarvis isn’t eligible to stay in the AHL, so he can either return to Portland or play in the NHL. He’ll likely return to the WHL, but after such an impressive start, he might earn a call-up to see if he can stick around at the NHL level first.

Farrell Breaks USHL Record

Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell broke the USHL single-season point streak record by extending his streak to 24 games. He reached the milestone soon after his teammate, Matthew Coronato, broke the USHL point streak record by amassing 54 points in his last 28 games across two seasons. Farrell has a chance to break that record as well, and it’s a pretty safe bet that he will. He has played 27 games this season and only failed to record a point once. His 18 goals and 55 points lead the league in scoring, and he is one point short of his 2019-20 season totals in 17 fewer games played.

Farrell and Coronato are both committed to Harvard University, so it won’t be the last time we will see this dynamic duo grace the ice. It’s pretty much a two-horse race for the USHL scoring title between the two, and Farrell has the edge by six points. Canadiens fans have a lot to be excited about, with Cole Caufield dominating the NCAA and Farrell having such an impressive season in the USHL.
